Bennox
High Carbon Wear Plate
Hard-Wearing & Abrasion Resistant Steel
Product Description
Steelox SA supplies Bennox, a high carbon wear-resistant steel plate designed for applications where good abrasion resistance is required without the need for more specialised alloyed wear steels.
Steel is generally classified as high carbon when the nominal carbon content exceeds 0.3%. Bennox falls within this category and provides a cost-effective solution for moderate wear environments.
This material is ideally suited to hard-wearing applications that do not require quenched and tempered or alloyed abrasion-resistant grades.
Equivalent Grades
- SS10
- Bennox
- NM200
Typical Applications
Bennox is commonly used for:
- Liner plates
- Scraper blades
- Wear strips
- General abrasion components
For best results, components are preferably installed using drilling and bolting rather than welding.
Hardness and Chemical Analysis

Hardness
| Hardness (HB) |

Important Note
This high carbon steel plate is produced to chemical analysis specification only. Mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, or impact resistance are not routinely tested and are therefore not guaranteed unless specifically agreed.
Processing Guidelines
Shearing
High carbon steels are generally harder than mild or structural steels and require additional care during shearing operations.
- Bennox can be sheared up to 12 mm thickness, provided sufficient machine power is available.
- Cutting edges must be sharp and clearance correctly set to avoid cracking or edge damage.
Flame Cutting
- Plates thicker than 12 mm should be flame cut.
- Preheating to a minimum of 100°C is recommended.
- Plates up to 25 mm may be flame cut without preheating if:
- Adequate care is taken, and
- Plates are immediately placed into a heat-treating furnace above 100°C after cutting.
Failure to follow these procedures may result in cracking.
Note: Bennox must not be worked at temperatures exceeding 250°C.
Formability
Cold forming and bending of high carbon steels is not recommended due to increased risk of cracking.
Weldability
High carbon steels are not readily weldable. Consultation with a qualified welding engineer is strongly recommended before attempting welding procedures.
